Yellowbello

Empowering retailers to reshape the future of shopping

Yellowbello emerged as a pioneering solution aimed at amplifying the digital footprint of local retailers on Google. Collaborating with 16 retailers right from the inception, my role involved steering UX/Product design, concept development, and embracing aspects of product management. Our partnership with these retailers, through regular weekly or monthly engagements, was instrumental in refining our approach, ensuring Yellowbello evolved as a co-created platform tailored to meet the nuanced needs of local businesses.

The Challenge

The core challenge that Yellowbello aimed to address was the struggle of local retailers to secure a visible online presence, particularly in Google's search results, to effectively compete with larger e-commerce entities. Despite their valuable offerings, many local stores remained overshadowed online due to limited resources and knowledge in digital marketing and SEO strategies. This challenge was compounded by the diverse needs and pain points of individual retailers, which varied significantly across our interactions. From the onset, it became clear that any effective solution would need to be both adaptable to various retail contexts and simple enough for any retailer to implement successfully. Our mission was to democratize online visibility for local retailers, allowing them to leverage their unique offerings and engage more directly with their community, ultimately driving increased foot traffic to their physical locations.

Co-Creation

From the outset, engaging closely with retailers was pivotal. These sessions were not just checkpoints but collaborative workshops where we immersed ourselves in the retail ecosystem, understanding the diverse challenges each retailer faced. Despite the variance in individual retailer struggles, common themes emerged, guiding multiple pivots in our original concept and roadmap. This iterative process, fueled by continuous feedback, helped crystallize a suitable business model, marking Yellowbello's journey as a genuine co-creation.

Solution and Product Development

Yellowbello materialized as an app enabling retailers to scan product barcodes and input essential details like price and inventory. Leveraging auto-content, our system employs AI for content creation and aggregates images to enrich product listings, essentially positioning Yellowbello as a comprehensive Product Information Management (PIM) system.

Learnings

Our interactions unveiled several insights:

  • The drive behind most physical retailers is the desire for direct customer interaction, not necessarily an online presence.

  • Online presence is a necessity rather than an ambition for many retailers.

  • A significant number of retailers prefer in-store sales to online transactions.

  • Maintaining an effective online presence and achieving high Google rankings is time-consuming for many retailers.

  • Online ventures of physical stores are often not profitable.

  • Inventory management across online and physical stores remains a challenge.

  • Satisfaction with current POS systems is generally low among retailers.
